Evan A. Sorensen, MS LMFT

Evan is the founder and director of the New England Institute for Marriage and Family Therapy. After earning his MS Degree from Fuller Theological Seminary School of Psychology in 1995, Evan held clinical and executive leadership positions with well known organizations in California, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

In 2008 Evan founded the New England Institute for Marriage and Family Therapy, a group psychotherapy practice dedicated to improving both individual and interpersonal quality of life in marriage and family systems. Evan’s style as a therapist can be described as calming, reflective, and supportive. He is also known for being directive, coaching clients to implement evidence-based skills known to help individuals, couples and families recover from distress brought on by such things as ineffective communication; chronic conflict; life transitions; sexual and non-sexual affairs; depression; anxiety, and prior emotional trauma/PTSD. As an evidence-based clinician, Evan has completed all three levels of training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy, has received certification training in EMDR for treating complex trauma and PTSD, and most recently a 200 hour certification program at Naropa University for cutting edge and progressive treatments for anxiety, depression and PTSD.

Evan has been an adjunct faculty professor for Providence College and Seminary – Graduate School of Counseling Psychology in Calgary and Manitoba, Canada and has contributed to numerous articles, interviews, and publications including including a chapter on Relational Approaches to Psychanalytic Treatment in Counseling Theories and Case Conceptualization, A Practice-Based Approach (Springer Publishing, 2024).

Jill Plumer, MA, LCMHC

Jill Plumer is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor who joined New England Institute for Marriage & Family Therapy in 2011. Jill earned a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Notre Dame College and a Certification in Human Services from The University of New Hampshire. She is a Certified Trainer in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and has received additional specialized trainings in areas of trauma recovery, addiction recovery, anger management, couples therapy, stress management, and the treatment of cognitive disorders.

Jill’s approach to treatment can be described as supportive, motivational, collaborative, coping skills based, and solution-focused. By employing a variety of effective strategies from Motivational, Cognitive Behavioral, and Dialectical Behavioral therapies, Jill is capable of implementing a broad range of clinical styles to assist clients of all ages in managing overwhelming feelings that can negatively impact the quality of their personal, marital, family, and vocational life. Jill’s designation as a certified trainer of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy leaves her particularly skilled in treating the individual, couple, or family who distressed by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, depression, addictions, and anger.

Jill is currently accepting new clients and has various daytime and evening appointments throughout the week. She is an in-network provider for most insurance carriers in NH and MA.

Amy Mercier, MA, LICSW

Amy Mercier is a licensed independent clinical social worker who earned her master's degree in clinical social work at the University of New Hampshire in 2007. She has over 15 years experience using evidence-based approaches in her work with individuals struggling with trauma, anxiety, depression, life transitions, infertility/post partum, eating disorders, grief/loss, and relationship problems. Amy is certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused therapy techniques to bring about positive changes.

Amy recognizes that most people experience challenges in life and painful moments that can seem difficult to understand and get through. Yet, with the right supports, she believes people are capable and worthy of regaining a sense of wellbeing. Amy is passionate about helping people find ways to recover from adversity and develop a stronger sense of self, meaning, and stability. She works under the notion that feeling comfortable and understood is essential to the outcome of therapy and uses a supportive, collaborative approach that is skills-focused.

Molly Mizula, LCMHC

Molly Mizula is a graduate of Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary , MA, 2016. Molly has extensive education and training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and is in a certification program for Gottman Method Couples Therapy. She is deeply experienced in couples and family therapy as well individual counseling for treating depression, anxiety and trauma/PTSD. Molly believes she and her clients can use these approaches together to strike a balance between change and acceptance. Her Mindfulness based approaches are aimed to assist clients in becoming aware of how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors impact your current situations and relationships

 

Rebecca Simmons, MA, CMHC

Rebecca is a graduate of Rivier University, MA CMHC 2022. Her counseling specialty areas include Marital and Premarital counseling, treatment for Anxiety and Depression, Divorce, Grief, Pregnancy, Prenatal, and Postpartum therapies, Women's Issues and LGBTQ+ awareness.

Rebecca takes a client centered approach that incorporates Somatic and Attachment theories. She uses nervous system regulation to empower clients to understand their inner world, and has an overarching belief that when we take the steps toward personal growth and begin to heal, we create a positive impact on the world around us.

Amy Mercier

Alison Mask, MA, MFT

Alison earned her MA in Couples and Family Therapy at Antioch University New England. While there she completed an internship at Concord Hospital Family Health Center and a Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency in Behavioral Health.

In her counseling practice, she integrates various therapeutic approaches tailored to each client's unique needs. With couples, she focuses on Emotion-Focused Therapy and the Gottman Method to facilitate effective communication and strengthen emotional bonds. In her family therapy work she employs Structural Family Therapy techniques to address relational patterns and promote harmony within the family system.

Mindfulness and somatic therapy are integral components of her therapeutic approach, and she is certified through The Embody Lab for Somatic Therapy and Somatic Attachment Therapy, offering clients tools to deepen their mind-body connection and cultivate awareness of their internal experiences.

With a foundation in Attachment Theory and a trauma-informed lens, Alison strives to empower clients to discover their innate strengths and create positive changes in their lives.

Michael Beaule, MA, CMHC

Michael is a graduate of Rivier University, MA CMHC 2022. His counseling specialties include marital, premarital and family counseling, addiction treatment, men’s issues, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), and trauma informed counseling. Michael is an established certified EMDR therapist treating individuals with complex trauma and PTSD. Michael believes sound, loving personal relationships are the cornerstone of a healthy community and a fulfilling life. He values his role in helping couples and individuals navigate through their personal journeys to find the pathway to their own personal peace.

Liz Padget-Weld, MFT Intern, Licensure Candidate

Liz Weld is a Graduate of Antioch University in her final months of internship, completing her degree in Couples and Family Therapy. Liz has been providing counseling to couples, families and children, accruing over 500 hours of direct in-person counseling over the course of her internship alone. In addition, for the last 20 years Liz has worked with adults and children in a variety of educational settings as a teacher, coach and facilitator. Liz is near finishing her certification in Gottman Couples Therapy, and undertaking that is comprised of nearly 100 hours of specialized training in the scientifically proven and internationally renowned approach to couples therapy. She is also training in Emotionally Focused Therapy, another evidenced-based couples therapy approach. Liz offers a collaborative approach to therapy, is an excellent listener and offers a warm and inviting space for clients to be themselves. As a graduate intern, Liz is supervised directly by Evan Sorensen, a licensed marriage and family therapist with over 20 years of experience in couples and family therapy, a fully trained Gottman Method Therapist, and a specialist in anxiety, depression and trauma-informed counseling. Evan is the owner and director of The New England Institute for Marriage and Family Therapy, a well-known and reputable group practice providing help and healing to couples, families and individuals since 2008.
